Full-coverage pedestrian survey of the middle Sama Valley (2017-present) has identified over 50 archaeological sites from the Archaic period (~6000 BC) to the Late Horizon (AD 1400-1532) along the edges of the floodplain. Ceramic and lithic assemblages attest to a versatile use of valley and lomas ecologies and the persistent movement of highland and coastal populations, animals, and goods through this corridor. This survey focuses on the systematic exploration of the valley’s prehispanic occupations with the intention of protecting local archaeological heritage from the rapidly expanding agricultural frontier.
