Beginning in 2017, the CIAAST team has been conducting archaeological research in the middle and lower Sama Valley. The projects are resolutely interdisciplinary, bringing together remote sensing, pedestrian survey, large-scale excavation, palaeoethnobotany, bioarchaeology and other methods. To date, our excavations have focused on two major sites in the middle valley: the fortified Cabuza (AD1000-1200) settlement at Los Batanes and the Inca (AD1400-1535) administrative center at Sama La Antigua.
